Das Umsatzkostenverfahren (UKV) gehört mittlerweile vor allem für Industrieunternehmen sowie bei international tätigen Firmen zum Standard. Der wesentliche Unterschied zum Gesamtkostenverfahren (GKV) besteht darin, dass die periodisch angefallenen Kosten auf sogenannte "Funktionen" ausgerichtet dargestellt werden, wie etwa Kosten des Umsatzes, Vertriebskosten, F&E-Kosten und allgemeine Verwaltungskosten. Von den Kosten des Umsatzes werden dabei nur diejenigen Kosten abgebildet, die tatsächlich zur Realisierung des Umsatzes der Periode angefallen sind. Üblicherweise erstellen die anfänglich skizzierten Unternehmen außerdem eine Segmentberichterstattung, in der sie das Ergebnis der einzelnen Teilunternehmen ausweisen.
