Das in Abbildung 2.1 dargestellte Ablaufschema ist für alle Informationssysteme in SAP zutreffend.

Im ersten Schritt gilt es, einen Report zu identifizieren und zu starten. Danach geben Sie sog. Selektionskriterien für eine Filterung des Datenbestands z.B. nach einer bestimmten Periode oder Gesellschaft vor. In vielen Reports können Sie auch den Detailierungsgrad sowie die Ausgabeformen auf dem Selektionsbild variieren.
Die eigentliche Ausgabe des Berichts findet in der dritten Phase statt. Reports können hierzu im Hintergrund ausgeführt werden. Das Ergebnis wird anschließend gedruckt oder im Drucker-Spool (der Warteschlange für Druckaufträge) gespeichert, wo es zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt analysiert werden kann. Alternativ kann ein Report auch am Bildschirm erstellt werden. Bei der Ausführung am Monitor erlauben Reports häufig eine dynamische Änderung des Inhalts (z.B. Filterung/Sortierung) und den Absprung in Detailreports.
Die Ergebnisse können grundsätzlich gedruckt, als Datei auf den PC geladen (download) oder SAP-intern als E-Mail versendet werden.
